Garden Designs

This is a really cool, big project on edge of the fens with long vistas over big open landscapes and big skies. It belongs to a couple with young children who view the whole thing as a long-term dream. Their remit is to create a garden that will evolve with them.
The house is an old cottage with a new contemporary addition. The modern elements are driving the design by providing some strong lines to work off and these are naturally helping break the garden into different spaces. Specifically, they wanted a big area with a pond, koi carp, a mini woodland to filter noise from the road. We’ve also designed a big family terrace at the back pf the house that links into the veg garden with a green house, as well as a big open lawn area for the children that drifts off into meadow and into the wider landscape.
The layout is really very simple with each area carrying a different atmosphere. We’ve included some clipped forms in the landscape, lots of movement relates back to architecture.

It was also important to create some more intimate, comfortable spaces that provide protection from the fierce wind that blow in.
As for materials, we’ve used brick to pick up on those used in the house, rendered walls that echo the new extension and sawn stone, which has a slightly more modern look, for the terraces. The arbours and arches are either metal or oak depending on where they are used in the garden.
They owners love plants and want to learn more about them so the emphasis will be on diversity. We also plant to include ornamental clipped shapes, fruit trees and wildflowers.
