Garden Designs

This is a little town garden for really lovely, interesting couple. The first thing that struck me when I visited them was their collection of art. The building is a modern twist on a town house, and the couple were really happy to push the boundaries.
The garden is relatively small but on a very steep bank that goes up 3 m high at the end of which was an old garage.
They wanted the space to draw them outside and as large windows overlooked the garden, they wanted it to serve as a piece of art with a sort of wow factor. With the actual design of the space, it was important to use terracing to navigate the slope and break up the space. We also used moving water all the way down the terraces to help drawing you into the space and we include a number of pause points at different moments. Providing privacy from neighbours was also important so the planting is quite immersive. We replaced the garage with a home office with windows that open out onto the space but that can be locked away like a wooden box.

Planting has a strong woodland feel with a tapestry of strong shapes and big foliage. It plays a lot with texture and form. You tend to be either eye level or looking down on the plants, eye level on plants which is a very different way of engaging with the space.
Materials-wise, it’s classic brick ,which ties in with house, along with Corten steel. It’s a great blend of the traditional with more contemporary elements and was really fun to work on.
