Garden Designs

This property belongs to a young couple with children. The house, an old brick cottage with a more modern extension, has just been renovated and there is an existing tennis court. It sits in a beautiful spot, but views to the wider landscape, including woodland, are obscured.

The couple have busy lives and the plan is to use the garden is their pressure valve, so a veg garden and entertaining areas are important. The design also involved creating new areas and views that would encourage the family to spend more time outdoors, as well as finding ways to reconnect the building to its surroundings.

We found a great area  that caught the last sun but it was in an odd place so we created a sunken garden with seating so that the family can sit there tucked away without the whole thing blocking the view. To divide the space without making it feel overly compartmentalised we designed a series of overlapping rectangles that connect together and also lead the eye to into the distance with softer shapes making a connection to the wider landscape.

For materials, we used a lot of brick as a way of referencing the building, along with natural stone which again was also present on the site. In the veg garden we made raised bed out of oak raised beds and installed a classic-style greenhouse. The planting is a classic English country garden mix.
