Garden Designs

This has been a fascinating project. The house is a beautiful Art deco building that the owner are bringing back to life while staying true to its original design ethos.
The original garden – also Art deco – would have been much larger, however sections had been sold off over the years so while we worked with the original layouts, we had to take this into account. We also had to update the design so that it would work with the owners’ current needs. For example they wanted a vegetable garden, a little swimming pool, an outdoor kitchen and generally be able to enjoy the benefits of life by the coast. We also wanted the garden to look cool and a bit quirky to reflect the aesthetic of the owners.

With this garden, it was important that the history of the site drove the design and while the whole garden required a major rethink, the design also had to be quite subtle in its approach. We looked at Art deco shapes and forms and worked out how we could use these to modernise the various existing areas without losing the overall aesthetic. All of the materials were also driven by what was originally there, including rendered walls. There we some large existing trees, and the remains of a little rockery but much of the original planting had been pared right back. We are currently working on planting plans.
