Lancashire
Garden Designs

This design was for the walled garden of an old manor house. The brief was to create the atmosphere of East meets West as a way of reflecting the client’s Indian heritage while ensuring the garden sat comfortably in the surrounding Lancashire countryside. It was important to make give the garden a heart and make sure it lent itself large scale entertaining of family and friends.
It was a fascinating project. We used Eastern principles of garden design and blended them with those of an English country garden.

We created a series of York stone steps that run about 40-50m across the garden and put in a big water feature with a central stone plinth (repurposed from a garden Cleve West designed for Chelsea) . The garden is broken down into various different sections with a rose arbour, little break out lawns, the water and ornamental meadows. The planting is English country garden with lots of roses and there is a constant juxtaposition between eastern and western influences. Really fun garden.
The garden is quite geometric in its layout, with lots of different ways of getting in and out and across the space.
The materials were locally driven and include brick for the pathways and York stone, from nearby quarries.
